What this word counter measures

MetricWhat it counts
WordsEvery whitespace-separated token that has at least one letter or number. Standalone punctuation is not counted.
CharactersThe total length of your text, spaces and line breaks included. A second count shows the total with spaces removed.
SentencesRuns of text ended by a period, exclamation mark, or question mark. A final line with no terminator still counts as one.
ParagraphsBlocks of text separated by a blank line. A single line of text is one paragraph.
Reading and speaking timeReading time uses 200 words per minute. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Both round up to the next whole minute.
KeywordsThe words you use most, after common filler words like "the" and "and" are removed, so the real topics stand out.

Common questions

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time divides your word count by 200 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading, then rounds up to the next whole minute. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical pace for reading aloud or presenting.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters with spaces is the total length of your text, including every space, tab, and line break. Characters without spaces removes all whitespace first, so you see only the visible letters, numbers, and punctuation. Many platforms count one way and not the other, so both are shown.

Does this tool store or send my text?

No. The counting happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to a server, so you can paste long drafts and confidential notes and still see instant counts.

What counts as a word?

A word is any group of characters, separated by spaces or line breaks, that contains at least one letter or number. Contractions like "don’t" and hyphenated terms like "well-known" count as a single word. Standalone punctuation, such as a lone dash, is not counted.
