Common questions
How do I make text bold or italic in Discord?
Discord uses Markdown. Wrap text in two asterisks for bold, like **hello**, and in one asterisk for italic, like *hello*. Use two underscores for underline, like __hello__. Type your text above, select it, and press a style to get the exact markup.
Do Discord colors work everywhere?
No. Colored text uses ANSI escape codes inside a code block that starts with three backticks and the word ansi. Discord renders these colors on the desktop app and in the web client. The mobile apps show the plain text without color, so use color as a bonus, not for critical information.
How do spoilers and headers work?
Wrap text in two vertical bars for a spoiler, like ||surprise||, and readers must click to reveal it. For headers, start a line with one, two, or three hash marks and a space. One hash is the largest header and three is the smallest.
Can I combine several styles at once?
Yes. Apply one style, keep the result selected, then apply another. For example, select bold text and add italic to get bold and italic together. The output box always shows the exact characters Discord expects.
