Audio plays after you press Play, because browsers block sound until you interact with the page. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent to a server.

How Morse code is written

Each letter is a short pattern of dots and dashes. A dot is one unit of time and a dash is three. Inside a word, letters are separated by a single space. Between words, a slash marks the gap. So the word HI is .... .. and HI THERE is .... .. / - .... . .-. ..

Playback uses the PARIS timing standard, where speed in words per minute sets the length of one dot. A higher words-per-minute value makes every dot, dash, and gap shorter in exact proportion, which is how real operators keep the rhythm readable at any speed.

Common questions

How do I translate text to Morse code?

Type or paste your words into the Text box and the Morse appears next to it as you type. Letters are separated by a space and whole words by a slash, which is the standard way to write Morse. Press Copy Morse to grab the result, or press Play to hear it.

How do I decode Morse code back to text?

Type the Morse into the Morse box using a period for a dot and a hyphen for a dash. Put one space between letters and a slash between words. The decoded text appears in the Text box. An unreadable group shows as a question mark so mistakes are easy to spot.

What does SOS look like in Morse code?

SOS is three dots, three dashes, three dots: ... --- ... . It was chosen as the international distress signal because the pattern is simple and hard to mistake, not because the letters stand for words.

Why does the audio only start after I press Play?

Browsers block sound until you interact with the page, so nothing can play on its own. Pressing Play both starts the beeps and unlocks audio. You can set the speed in words per minute and the tone pitch in hertz before you play.
