Common questions

Which barcode type should I use?

Use Code 128 when you need to encode letters, numbers, or symbols, such as a shipping reference or an internal asset tag. Use EAN-13 or UPC-A only for retail products, because those symbologies accept digits in a fixed length and carry a check digit that scanners verify. EAN-13 is the global retail standard and UPC-A is its 12-digit North American form.

What is a check digit and do I need to add it?

A check digit is a final number calculated from the others so a scanner can detect a misread. You do not add it yourself. Enter the first 12 digits for EAN-13 or the first 11 for UPC-A, and the tool computes and appends the correct check digit. If you paste a full code that already includes one, the tool validates it and tells you if it is wrong.

Will these barcodes actually scan?

Yes. The bar patterns follow the published Code 128, EAN-13, and UPC-A specifications, including the start, guard, and stop patterns and the modulo check symbols. For reliable scanning, keep the quiet zone (the white margin) around the code, print at a size the scanner can resolve, and avoid stretching the image out of proportion.

Can I use these barcodes commercially?

The images are yours to use. For retail, note that a genuine EAN or UPC number must be assigned to your product through GS1, the body that issues them, so that it is unique in stores. This tool renders any number you supply; it does not register one for you.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The barcode is generated on your own device with in-browser code, and the SVG or PNG is built locally. Nothing you type is uploaded, so the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
